  • Academic and Community Medical Center Clinical Research Improvement Programs

Although no academic or large community-based health center will easily acknowledge that they have not fully met their objectives in attracting and conducting significant sponsored clinical research to their institution, the reality is--for ALL CENTERS--that NONE has met its full potential, and MOST centers have at best demonstrated but a modest beginning to this complex process.  At the same time, pressures are growing to meet important contemporary research and financial compliance issues, as well as develop alternative revenue streams to support critical financial underpinnings of the each institution.  Rarely have we found the limitations on sponsored clinical research initiatives (programs) to reflect on the capabilities of the administration or the faculty.  Typically, this is a matter of developing an entirely new set of skills and experience in this realm of sponsored clinical research--skill sets that are not typically available within conventional medical centers.   Although one might naturally think that these skills can, theoretically, be laboriously developed and applied by each institution, often these "homegrown" approaches are not only often inadequate for the job, but also, importantly, often thwarted by competing priorities or agendas, leaving a history of failed attempts at such programs.   We have also observed that "borrowing" clinical research programs from more advanced institutions rarely works effectively---"one size does NOT fit all"!  Our clients have validated our philosophy that the availability of independent, seasoned professionals who understand BOTH the culture and needs of medical centers AND the requirements for sponsored research can be an invaluable support to timely development or advances in such institutional programs.
